Associate in General Education
The Associate in General Education (AGE) curriculum is designed for individuals wishing to broaden their education, with emphasis on personal interest, growth, and development. Courses offered in the curriculum provide a foundation for success and meet course requirements for the online 911 Communication and Operations degree program at Richmond Community College.
Rockingham Community College has an instructional service agreement with Richmond Community College to offer 38 semester hour credits of the required 65 semester hour credit online 911 Communication and Operation associate of applied science program. The remaining 27 semester hour credits will be earned at Richmond Community College. Rockingham Community College students will be placed in a general education major of A10300CO while they take classes at Rockingham Community College.
Students must apply to both community colleges and may receive financial aid at both colleges to complete the program. Students will be assigned a faculty advisor at Rockingham and Richmond Community College. All the courses will be offered online; however, there may be face-to-face or hybrid sections offered too.
Upon completion of the credit hours at Rockingham Community College and Richmond Community College, a student will be awarded an associate of applied science degree in 911 Communication and Operations from Richmond Community College.
Curriculum Description
The 911 Communication and Operations curriculum is designed to provide new students, as well as current practitioners, with knowledge and skills in the areas necessary for entrance or advancement within emergency communications.
Coursework includes concepts and skills in telecommunication systems, basic software and GIS/GPS, communications, documentation, public administration, personnel management and supervision, grant writing, professional ethics, cultural awareness, mental health awareness, and adaptation to technology within emergency communication organizations.
Graduates should qualify for employment and advancement in the public safety telecommunications field with a variety of employers, including local government emergency communications centers, county sheriffs’ offices, local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, emergency management, and related emergency dispatch operations.
